Day 2 - explore & map your soundscape

Join us for 12 days of immersive and exploratory inspiration for reconnecting ourselves respectfully with the natural world and each other.

Experience the calming, rejuvenating and healing power of being in the present moment surrounded by nature, mindfully aware of yourselves and the world around you, synching back with your natural rhythms, cycles and flow!

A soundscape is the acoustic sounds we experience when immersed in an environment. A wonderful way to orientate and ground yourself in a new environment - natural or human made, providing you with a deeper sense of place. â€‹Your mind interprets these sounds by naming and cataloguing them, deciding how you will interact with these sounds emotionally and physically.

Activity

Find a comfortable, shaded space to sit quietly in nature. Close your eyes and bring awareness to your sense of hearing. As you hear sounds, not what is creating them, what the sound represents such as a bird landing in water, wind rustling leaves above you meaning there are trees, cars in the distance meaning there is a road.

Use this information to create a map in your mind's eye of where these elements are located in relation to you;

  • what sounds can you hear in the distance? May be human or nature sounds.

  • bring your awareness closer, what sounds can you hear immediately around you? You may be able to hear your own breath or heartbeat.

  • what do the sounds tell you about your environment - is there;

    • a body of water, creek, river, waterfall, lake?

    • wind through leaves in the tree canopy above?

    • what types of animals do you hear and note their sounds of movement over leaves, gravel, sand, water, rustling in trees?

  • open your eyes, sit with what you've just experienced. Take time to look all around you and compare what you see with your mind's eye map.

You may like to write or draw your map in your nature journal. Perhaps craft a poem about your soundscape and how it makes you feel. We'd love to hear or read it!

Reconnecting ourselves regularly with the natural world has profound health & wellbeing benefits for our whole body; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

May you enjoy your family adventures and making cherished memories! Share your photos with us on Instagram #12daysofnaturefun and let's cultivate an inspiring collection of respectful nature experiences with our beautiful community!

Respectful play

A loving reminder to enjoy our natural world with a deep sense of reverence/respect;

  • leave no trace (take rubbish away with you)

  • be mindful of plants and animals when leaving a trail to explore

  • leave chemicals/pollutants out of waterways and the environment

  • we share the environment with other living beings to whom it is home, both plant and animal. If collecting natural materials or treasures, do so from the ground and not removed from a living plant - mindful of animals that use the material as shelter
